Another Pentwater Weekend

Special thanks to Mike who has to keep up with my chores as well as his while I am on bed rest. This weekend my mom insisted I go to the beach and I am really glad she did. It was gorgeous out. She dropped us off and I only had to walk a few feet from the van to get to our spot. It was the best hour of my weekend and much needed...

We spent some of our beautiful Saturday at the park by our house.
Tyler rode the gator and the kid drives like an old man.
He only goes one speed, doesn't stop for anything, and is all over the road.
Consider yourself warned...

My awesome chair...

I bought the most awesome chair ever at a thrift shop last week for $35 for photo shoot backgrounds.
I am in love.
Mike hates it. A lot.

I think I might move it into our bedroom...

Love

We had a nice low-key Valentines Day. Mike and I are fortunate enough to go on dates at least twice a month, that we didn't really want to battle the crowds to go out on Valentines. We didn't do any cards or gifts either. Mike helped me a TON around the house over the weekend plus was super patient at the mall on Saturday evening. Romantic? No...but just what I needed.

Tyler having a more and more common two year old moment. Where did my sweet baby go???

Stuck

Mike was working late last night so Tyler and I went shopping and out to dinner with my parents. After dinner, Tyler didn't want to come home with me and continued shopping with my mom and dad.

Glad that he wasn't with me when I got home and couldn't get in the driveway.

By not getting in the driveway, I mean being completely, hopelessly stuck.

In my SUV.

So, I did what any midwestern farmer's daughter would do and got out and started shoveling. I got most of the driveway done by the time Mike pulled up. I was still stuck, but there was a clear (or mostly clear) path ahead.

Not long after Mike got home, our very nice neighbor came over and offered us the use of his snowblower. Those things are awesome. I want one. Bad...

My parents dropped Tyler off and I put a chair in our window so he could watch us shovel our way through a foot of snow.

Tonight I should go out and finish up my last little bit of shopping for Christmas. Instead, we are curling up on the couch and either catching up on shows from the week or watching season one of The Office that Blockbuser so kindly mailed us.

I know, I know we don't watch The Office. But we are starting from the beginning and will be caught up for next year.

I have chili in the crockpot that we will enjoy for dinner along with some semi-homemade cornbread. Yummy...

Oh...Tyler got a haircut last week. He looks so much older now with his wispy curls gone.
Sad, but cute.

Merry Decade

We have a tradition that started the first Christmas that Mike and I were together. Our tradition is that we got suckered into the personalized ornament club by some kiosk at the mall. Once you start you really can't stop, not sure why...but you can't. Don't believe me? Try it...I'll see you there next year.

We've been all sorts of things...snowmen, angels, santas, wreaths...you name it. When we got Riley, we added an icon. We were no longer two snowman, we were three. When we had Tyler, we became four. We haven't gotten our ornament this year yet, so not sure what four we will be, but I'm sure we will be something cool...you know, like snowmen.

As I was decorating the tree on Sunday, I was putting on our personal ornaments. I am admittedly anal about tree decorating. I like to have like kinds and colors of ornaments on my tree. There has to be a theme...There is also an order that I go in. I start with the personal ornaments, that way they are all spread out and not clustered together looking like the mall kiosk they came from. As I was putting on the ornament from 1999, our first one, it dawned on me that it was old! I did some quick (or not so quick) math and realized this was our 10th Christmas together. We started dating the summer before my senior year of high school.

You know how much has changed in 10 years?

I graduated high school, got married, learned how to fight fair, bought a house, graduated college, got a dog, had a baby, bought two cars, lost two cars, had lots of jobs, gained weight, lost weight, gained weight again, bought 8 more ornaments, gained some wisdom, grew closer to family, replaced basement carpet twice, learned to be less anal (except with my tree), gained friends, lost friends, still love chocolate...and somehow in the middle of all that I became content and stopped caring what others think...You can mock me and I don't care, but my favorite song right now is the chicken fried song, solely because of this part, which sums up what I've learned over the last decade:

Well its funny how it`s the little things in life that mean the most
Not where you live or the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes
There`s no dollar sign on a piece of mind this I`ve come to know

Mike and I definitely have a routine and we have roles. We have spent the last 10 years learning how to be comfortable together and I love it. We've learned how to adapt our routine and roles based on what our life is like at the moment too. And to spice things up once and awhile...we have date night once or twice a month. We also get to add two other ornaments to our tree each year, a tradition coming from my mom and dad...adding an ornament for the kids. One for Riley (I know she isn't a person, but dogs are like kids too) and one for Tyler. In 10 more years, by the time I get done putting on the personal ornaments, there won't be anymore room for the theme of the year. Maybe by then I will have learned to be less anal about my tree...or we get another tree and that one can be mine alone.

Merry Decade Christmas Baby....here's to 50 more...

Snowy Sunday

Since the neighborhood shovel crew skipped our house yesterday, we had to shovel today. When I say "we" had to shovel, what I really mean is Mike...while Tyler plays and I take photos. It's our thing...
Tyler wasn't too thrilled with the snow at first, but eventually got the hang of it. The photo where mike is giving me a dirty look is when I dropped down and did a snow angel. He thought it was weird. It was cold but sunny and I laid there, like an angel of course, for a few minutes looking up at the sky. Then some birds flew overhead and I thought about following them to Florida. I will be a snow bird when I get older, for sure.

What in the world was I thinking?

Mike has been working between 65 to 70 hours a week lately. I love it and hate it simultaneously. I love it because the money is way better than when he was working 30 hours per week. not to mention the fact that, in this economy, he has a job at all. I hate it because he is never around and i have to do a lot of things myself that I prefer not to do alone... or at all.

Things I will never do alone again...major Christmas shopping at the mall with Tyler and a ton of snow. Did I mention that my parking spot was really far out and I had to make trips to the car and back with purchases? As a reminder to myself to be grateful, with Mike working so much, I could make the purchases without worries, but still....not fun. At all.

Things I don't want to do at all...shovel the drive way. I almost impulse purchased a snow blower even though it isn't in the budget. I wish we had a neighbor kid who would shovel for $5 or $10...I would totally help him earn some money. Just as I was typing this, 3 boys walked by with shovels and SKIPPED my house. That is bad for business boys, bad for business.

Tonight we were going to put up our Christmas tree because we had plans for tomorrow. I refuse to wait any longer in december to get my house festive...this weather is just too gloomy without some holiday cheer at home. Those plans were just canceled and I called mike to let him know. We were both on the same page. We are ordering pizza and watching whatever movie blockbuster mailed to us this week. Now...I should go clean, but we shall see.
